Why the Environment Matters in the Early Years

Within the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, the learning environment plays an important role in supporting children’s development. Our approach also draws inspiration from the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which recognises the environment as the third teacher.

The space around a child should encourage independence, creativity, emotional regulation and sustained concentration. These qualities are far more difficult to nurture in an environment that feels cluttered, noisy or overwhelming.

By combining principles from Reggio Emilia and Montessori with the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, we create high-quality learning environments that feel calm, welcoming and familiar.

Shelves are low and accessible. Resources are thoughtfully presented in baskets and trays. Each area of the classroom encourages children to make independent choices, return materials when they have finished and take pride in their surroundings.
