When Siblings Clash: Teaching Young Children to Handle Conflict with Care
Even the most loving siblings have moments of big emotions and clashing personalities, especially in the early years. And while the sound of “he hit me!” or “that’s mine!” might be familiar to parents, these moments are teachable opportunities in disguise.

At Jumeirah Nursery, we view sibling conflict not as a failure, but as a chance to build social skills, emotional intelligence, and lifelong relationship tools.
Why Sibling Conflict Happens
- Children are still learning how to share space and attention
- Their brains are developing impulse control and language
- They’re expressing emotions they don’t yet know how to manage
Conflict is normal. What matters most is how we guide them through it.
How to Support Resolution at Home
1. Stay Calm and Neutral
Avoid jumping in as the “judge.” Instead, stay calm and help each child feel heard.
2. Name the Emotion
Use phrases like “It looks like you’re feeling frustrated because your turn ended.” This builds emotional vocabulary.
3. Offer Tools, Not Just Time-Outs
Guide children to brainstorm solutions, take turns, or make amends in age-appropriate ways.
4. Model Respectful Conflict
Let them hear how adults apologise, compromise, and listen… they’re always watching.
What We Do at Jumeirah International Nurseries
Within the EYFS framework, our expert educators coach children through conflict using gentle language, reflection time, and collaborative problem-solving. We don’t just resolve issues; it’s about teaching tools for life.
In our nurturing, respectful environment, children learn how to navigate conflict with care whether with siblings, friends, or future peers.
Because resilient relationships start young and the best learning often comes from the hardest moments.
