What is the EYFS Framework?
At Jumeirah International Nurseries (JINS), our curriculum is rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, a comprehensive approach that guides how we support, nurture, and assess children’s learning and development from birth to five years. The EYFS is the foundation of every child’s educational journey, shaping how they play, learn, and grow into confident, curious learners ready for school and beyond.
Understanding the EYFS Framework
The EYFS Framework is a set of standards established by the UK Department for Education. It ensures that every child receives a high-quality early years education that supports their holistic development, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. At its heart, the EYFS recognises that children learn best through play, meaningful interaction, and real-world exploration.
The framework focuses on four key guiding principles:
- Every child is unique – Each child has individual strengths, interests, and learning patterns that should be valued and nurtured.
- Positive relationships – Children thrive when they feel secure, loved, and supported by caregivers and educators.
- Enabling environments – A well-planned environment encourages curiosity, independence, and exploration.
- Learning and development – Learning is a dynamic process that unfolds through play, discovery, and social interaction.
The Seven Areas of Learning and Development
The EYFS divides learning into seven interconnected areas, which form the backbone of early education at JINS.
Prime Areas: These lay the foundation for all future learning:
- Communication and Language – Developing listening, understanding, and speaking skills.
- Physical Development – Building strength, coordination, and motor control through active play.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Nurturing confidence, resilience, empathy, and self-regulation.
Specific Areas: Once the prime areas are established, the specific areas help broaden learning:
- Literacy – Encouraging an early love of books, stories, and mark-making.
- Mathematics – Introducing concepts like counting, shapes, and patterns through practical, hands-on experiences.
- Understanding the World – Exploring people, places, nature, and technology to make sense of the environment.
- Expressive Arts and Design – Using creativity, imagination, and self-expression through music, movement, and art.
EYFS at JINS
At JINS, the EYFS framework forms the core of our teaching philosophy, but what sets us apart is how we bring it to life. Our educators design purposeful play-based activities that inspire children to question, create, and connect ideas. We go beyond traditional learning by integrating global best practices such as Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Positive Education, and The Curiosity Approach , giving our classrooms a uniquely warm, collaborative, and exploratory spirit.
Children at JINS are encouraged to follow their interests, whether it’s building with blocks, storytelling, exploring nature, or experimenting with textures and colours. Every activity is intentionally designed to meet EYFS outcomes while nurturing independence and joy in learning.
The JINS Difference
- Individual Learning Journeys: Each child at JINS has a personalised learning journey, allowing teachers and parents to track progress across EYFS milestones.
- Highly Qualified Educators: Our teachers are EYFS-trained professionals who understand child development and know how to support each learner’s pace and potential.
- Nurturing Environments: From our bright, open classrooms to sensory gardens and discovery zones, every space is designed to stimulate curiosity and comfort.
- Holistic Development: Beyond academics, we focus on emotional well-being, physical health, creativity, and social skills, ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and supported.
Why the EYFS Matters
A strong foundation in the early years has a lifelong impact. The EYFS Framework equips children not just with literacy and numeracy skills, but with the mindset to explore, question, and collaborate. It helps them develop resilience, empathy, and confidence, qualities essential for success in school and in life.
At Jumeirah International Nurseries, we see EYFS not as a checklist, but as a philosophy that celebrates childhood. Every day is a chance for our little learners to imagine, explore, and grow, one joyful discovery at a time.
