Embracing Shyness as a Starting Point

Starting nursery can feel exciting, unfamiliar or overwhelming, particularly for children who are naturally quiet or reserved.

Shyness is not something that needs to be “fixed”. It is often simply a child’s way of taking time to observe, understand and feel secure. With patient support and a nurturing environment, children can gradually become more comfortable expressing themselves, joining activities and building relationships.

At Jumeirah International Nurseries, we see shyness as a starting point, not a barrier.

Creating a Nurturing Environment

A warm and welcoming environment is essential for social development. Children are more likely to communicate, participate and connect with others when they feel safe, respected and understood.

Our British early years approach creates inclusive spaces in which every child is encouraged to develop at their own pace. Across our provision, including FS1, FS2 and Year 1, educators build trusting relationships and help children feel that they belong.

Building the Foundations of Social Confidence

Social development is not a one-size-fits-all process. Each child follows an individual journey, supported through everyday experiences such as shared play, conversations and classroom routines.

• Peer Interaction: Children are given regular opportunities to play, explore and work alongside their peers. Through these experiences, they begin to practise cooperation, turn-taking, empathy and teamwork.
• Communication Skills: Educators support both verbal and non-verbal communication, helping children express their needs, share ideas and listen attentively to others.
• Managing Disagreements: Small disagreements are a natural part of childhood. With gentle guidance, children learn how to communicate their feelings, listen to another point of view and work towards solutions respectfully.
• Emotional Awareness: Recognising and managing emotions is an important part of social development. Children are encouraged to identify how they feel, express those feelings appropriately and begin understanding the emotions of others.

Learning Through a Rich and Balanced Curriculum

Our learning approach provides age-appropriate, interactive experiences that support children from Little Learners through to Creative Achievers.

Guided by the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, our curriculum supports Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

These experiences are complemented by enrichment opportunities such as Arabic and French, music, movement and dance, as well as selected activities delivered with specialist providers.

Our aftercare provision also gives children further opportunities to learn and socialise through purposeful, play-based experiences supported by trained staff.
