From Home to Nursery: How Young Children Learn Positive Behaviour

At Jumeirah International Nurseries, we know that positive behaviour develops over time, beginning with the small, everyday moments children share with the adults they trust most.

The values, routines and expectations introduced early in life create the foundations for emotional regulation, respectful relationships and positive social interactions.

And the good news? You do not need a rigid rulebook. Consistency, patience and connection can make a meaningful difference.

How to Encourage Positive Behaviour at Home

1. Model What You Want to See

Children learn from your actions, not only your words. When you speak calmly, respond to frustration with empathy and treat others with kindness, your child begins to understand how to do the same.

2. Create Predictable Routines

A consistent daily rhythm, including regular wake-up times, mealtimes, play and rest, helps children feel secure. When children know what to expect, they are often more cooperative and less reactive.

3. Offer Choices and a Voice

Giving children simple, age-appropriate choices helps build confidence and cooperation.

For example: “Would you like to tidy the blocks or the books first?”

4. Reinforce Positive Behaviour

Notice and name the behaviour you would like to encourage.

For example: “I love how gently you helped your sister with her shoes.”

Positive reinforcement is often far more effective than focusing only on what has gone wrong.

How We Reinforce Positive Behaviour at Jumeirah International Nurseries

Our approach is rooted in the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and enhanced by Positive Education.

Our experienced educators guide children through encouragement, emotional coaching and clear, consistent boundaries within an environment that feels safe, calm and respectful.

Together with parents, we help children develop not simply “good behaviour”, but the inner skills needed for empathy, problem-solving and resilience, both at nursery and at home.
