From Drama to Dance: How Extra Activities Shape Big Feelings & Friendships

When we think of extracurricular activities, we often picture fun and creativity: music, movement, messy art or a lively game of football. But these experiences are far more than optional extras. They play an important role in a child’s social and emotional development, particularly during the early years.

At Jumeirah International Nurseries, we understand that confident learners are not shaped by academics alone. Children also need space to express themselves, discover new interests and feel connected to others. That is exactly what extracurricular activities are designed to support.

Why Extracurricular Activities Matter in the Early Years

From the moment a child joins a drama circle or takes part in a mini yoga session, they begin to:

  • Build confidence by trying something new
  • Learn how to cooperate, take turns and share space
  • Express big emotions through movement, music or storytelling
  • Explore their interests, strengthening curiosity and resilience

Whether it is football, dance, gardening or French, every experience adds another layer to a child’s emotional toolkit. These activities help children become more self-aware, empathetic and adaptable.

The Jumeirah International Nurseries Approach

Aligned with the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, our extracurricular programme is woven into the learning experience. It is not simply an add-on, but an important part of how children learn, grow and express themselves. Led by experienced educators, these sessions support the whole child socially, emotionally and creatively within a nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to shine.

When children feel free to express themselves, they become more than learners. They become confident individuals who are ready for whatever comes next.
